Alright, we now have our collective knickers in respective knots! How short IS the American mind? You ARE aware that the "new" House of 'Representatives' are now thinking of 1) raising the retirement age, 2) doing away with the home mortgage interest deduction, 3) cancelling the Social Security Cost of Living Adjustment...you ARE aware of this...right?
Man, you should have heard the chuffed conversation around the breakfast table. 1) all of us are under retirement age and we can't get a job that pays even minimum wage...around here that is $2.12 an hour...yeah, I know the national lower limit is what? $7.15 an hour...well, don't even get us started on that! 2) This is the ONLY deduction available to us that is left...all of our kids have left and have (or don't) have kids and are trying to own a home...why do that if there is no hope of deducting something...do any of you remember that we used to be able (until Reagan's administration)- that was a Republican one, right?, to deduct ANY interest we were charged...interest on credit cards...interest on cars, interest on homes...try to do that now! 3) We would like for those who would cancel the SS COLA to live (as THEY are living now) on a SS check...oh, yeah we get to pay tax on that now which effectively deminishes that amount by 33%.
Puff! Well, we all went to a Veteran's ceremony today, held in the cold, with the wind blowing, the flags flying and the veterans standing at attention. We shed a few silent tears for those of our collective families that are not with us anymore because of their dedication and we came back to discuss the question: What does freedom mean to you? We were all glad that many of our retail and government offices were closed this day...a bit inconvenient, but dang it...freedom isn't free...you have to keep vigilance and remember history or you are bound to repeat it.
